Walmart Implements Buying Restrictions on Pokémon TCG Products

In a significant move, Walmart has started enforcing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can buy during a single visit. This policy was activated starting November 5th, based on a company memo shared with employees.

Addressing Scalper Activity

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was prompted by a viral TikTok video that showed a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video faced significant criticism for permitting the bulk transaction to proceed.

Policy Details and Potential Loopholes

The updated guideline states that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card boxes or packs per store visit. However, the wording has sparked debate due to its vagueness. What exactly qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.

Moreover, because the restriction is based on individual trips, theoretically an eager reseller could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate large quantities throughout the day.

The Scalping Phenomenon

To most players, such efforts might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's common behavior. In recent years, scalpers have greatly contributed to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.

Certain buyers seek to resell sealed items at a markup, whereas some search for rare cards that can command extraordinary prices. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases has been listed for over $800 on various platforms.

Upcoming Releases

This policy change coincides with the imminent release of the Phantasmal Flames set, scheduled for November 14th. Pre-release sales already show premium cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the ongoing demand and potential scalper target.

Hopefully, Walmart's restrictions will curb bulk purchases and increase access for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts as well.
