Tuchel Seeks Jude Bellingham's Fire Provided The Three Lions' Star Leaves His Ego Outside.
A single omission proved sufficient. Another and it might have appeared vindictive from the England manager, who is much too clever not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, although it is equally up to the player to fit into the tactical structures and player rankings required with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's welcoming fold.
The manager wants his aggressive mentality, his intensity, but it is about using it in the right way. Individual quality is important but England have learned the hard way that there is a cost when fame takes over. Nevertheless, a point has been made.
Bellingham had much to ponder after not being selected of the recent team selection. He watched England qualify at the tournament without him. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach discuss appreciating the team's dynamism and principles. Naturally, he has responded in champion style, netting important strikes for Real Madrid versus their rivals and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham focused on pressuring the opposition rather than teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to creating tension with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time not playing has shown him that playing for one's country is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now offer support around the youngster after demonstrating that he is unafraid to take tough decisions.
“There is no problem with him, and no concern about his personality,” the German commented. “Jude displays the edge. It takes a sharp mentality to reach the heights that he reached. Everyone must support him and establish a atmosphere where he can use his drive against rivals and towards the goals we are building as a team.”
Bellingham dominated much of the focus at the team news conference for this month’s meaningless matches against one opponent and Albania. Who else? Indeed, how about another talent? Here is another prodigious No 10 in need of support and direction. Foden has not played for England since spring and has struggled to hit the heights this year but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after how he played in Manchester City’s win against the German side recently.
The issue, though, is how to use the attacking talents at available. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to select another youngster once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Would taking multiple creators to the World Cup be excessive? Gareth Southgate never found the optimal mix at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, restricting the captain's style as a result.
It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it hurts the offensive structure. Space exists for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. He is in as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for Foden, who must play through the middle. Tuchel prefers him near the striker. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘We want you in the team but no spot exists on your best position, can you play the left side? Or the other flank?’” he stated. “He is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision about him for a long time. In my view it fits his style best.”
Tuchel conceded there are times when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “One senses almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion to play football, then clearly something is not right, be it the position, the environment, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is additionally accustomed to playing for his club in a particular setup, to have a defined role. Believe he profits greatly from clear instructions. What is my position? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defend?
Tuchel mentioned Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and Foden scoring strikes from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is recognized for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Interest is high.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested using the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are alternatives should he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.
Meanwhile, it is also a moment to develop the understanding with his teammate going. It's surprising that you have to go back to the latter assisting the captain to score in a friendly win versus the Scots in September 2023 to find the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a goal. The coach will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“This is where at some point it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. There is still a feeling of Bellingham having to prove himself. He may not be guaranteed to begin against Serbia and Albania. The manager desires Bellingham onside but he will be watching him closely. Set aside self-importance outside. It will make a powerful England team into an even better one.
