Three-time NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic suffered a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee when the Denver Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 to the Heat.

The Serbian center injured himself towards the end of the second quarter during an accidental contact with teammate Spencer Jones.

Jones stepped on the footwear of the MVP, and he instantly went down to the floor clutching his leg.

The star, who leads the league this season in rebounds and dimes, posted 21 points and eight assists in the matchup before incurring the setback.

Jokic will undergo an scan on Tuesday to evaluate the extent of the problem.

"Immediately, Jokic knew he was hurt," stated Denver head coach Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Any player that gets hurt, it's tough to see, particularly a player as talented as he is. We will know more on Tuesday."

"The team will adjust as a team. Obviously, right now, I'm more worried about Jokic as a person and the frustration of experiencing a situation like that."
