The Reze Arc Movie Tops American Cinema Earnings in First Weekend

Has Sony achieved another hit? Coming after the triumph of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned in excess of $600 million worldwide, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has reached beyond the hundred-million-dollar threshold internationally, hitting a worldwide gross of over $108 million in its opening frame. The film beat out Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its second week in movie houses, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring the talented Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Notable American and Global Earnings

The work of filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It brought in over $18 million in North America after a robust $5.2 million Saturday and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday. Internationally, the produced by MAPPA movie added $14.7M across 46 Sony markets, pushing its worldwide total to $60.4M under Sony ($43.1 million overseas, $18.2M in the U.S.). The studio has not yet revealed its complete box office tally.

Comparisons to Past Successful Anime Films

Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment previously spoke, comparing the film’s projected performance to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34M in the North America in the year 2022 and started with a nearly identical $18 million domestically. This movie's opening frame aligns with that marker, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar international sum presently stands slightly below the earlier film's over $166 million total earnings. Even if it doesn't seem possible this Chainsaw Man film will match the numbers of mega hit the enormous hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a huge win for Sony.

Promotional Efforts Drive Box Office Dominance

Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged community involvement to propel their supremacy at the cinema for anime films. The movie's marketing campaign launched at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, unique experiences, and photo opportunities with Pochita, and later included a major presence at the New York Comic Con showcasing behind-the-scenes footage, audience giveaways, and further MAPPA discussions. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for the public and content creators as well after the final day of the event.

Looking Ahead

2025 is a major time for anime, and for the company, which has another anime film debuting in 2025 in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
