The Manager Enzo Maresca Labels Lead-Up Period as His 'Worst 48 Hours' at the Club
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the run-up to the weekend's victory against Everton was "the toughest 48 hours" since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
The 44-year-old offered a somewhat cryptic comment in his after-game interview even after earning a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge courtesy of goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those crucial points propelled Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, potentially improving the mood after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's winless run to four matches.
However, when asked about the full-back's contribution and general display, Maresca unexpectedly shared his annoyance over the preceding 48-hour period within the club.
"How the players are eager to develop has been superb and this is the reason why I commend them - because with numerous challenges, they are performing admirably after a complicated week," he commented.
"Since I joined the club, the previous 48 hours have been the worst because several people withheld support from us."
When pushed further on the specifics, the ex- Leicester City boss continued: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When questioned if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. In general," before specifying when asked if it was aimed at fans or the media: "I love the fans and we are very content with the fans."
Fitness and Disciplinary Woes
Maresca also highlighted Chelsea's persistent fitness and disciplinary issues, remarking they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the campaign, as well as losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of significant injuries.
"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, eleven of them without Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are doing brilliantly. Today was 5 games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer playing, we said many times that he's our top player but we play almost all season without our top player.
"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to acknowledge because the work from the players is fantastic."
Chelsea's triumph over Everton cemented their position in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.
Uncertainty Regarding Maresca's Comments
It was ambiguous who or what prompted Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea manager.
In that window, the Italian had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a session at Cobham, attended a pre-match news conference where he appeared at ease, and secured a win over an in-form Everton side.
It was not obvious whether any particular media reports had irked him, if social media comments were a factor, or if it was something more significant from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an issue involving the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester in July 2024.
