Patrick Bamford Joins Sheffield United Despite Leading Abusive Chants About Coach Wilder
The striker has signed with Sheffield United just seven months following starting insulting taunts aimed at the team's coach, Chris Wilder.
This experienced forward, a free agent since leaving Leeds, has signed a contract joining the Championship strugglers through the winter. His seven-year time with Leeds finished amicably this past summer.
One of Bamford’s last memorable actions while at Leeds was to lead insulting songs regarding Wilder amid Leeds' success festivities this spring. Currently, the one-cap England international will be playing under Wilder as the Blades’ manager looks to lift the team he loves away from the drop zone.
Previous Conflict Between the Striker and Wilder
The pair had a past before Leeds won promotion to the Premier League last season and United lost the promotion decider by Sunderland. Wilder called Bamford as “a muppet” back when the situation was different in 2018-19 and the Blades won direct promotion while Leeds United missed out in the promotion playoffs.
Making Amends and Moving Forward
Everything appears to have been forgiven and forgotten with United, the league's least productive attack, urgently requiring of improvement up front and Bamford aiming to revive his career.
The Wilder chant spread widely in April. A repentant Patrick and the Leeds manager, Farke, phoned Wilder the following day.
Wilder said back then: “Had a conversation with Patrick yesterday and I’ve no problem at all with it. I'm uncertain about the words used from a fellow professional! However I appreciated and admired him calling me.
“We had 20 minutes and similarly I talked with Daniel too and we had a longer discussion with him and he's a super guy, a top guy. Back in my playing days we would give it and take it and that is part and parcel of the game at every level, including Sunday league. I've got absolutely no issue. I am cool with the situation and I said that to Pat.”
Recent Playing Challenges
The forward featured in 18 appearances with Leeds United in the previous campaign but the former Forest, Chelsea FC & Boro striker has struggled with fitness issues over the past few seasons.
