At least 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.

Four police officers were among those killed during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives said. Over 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Fierce clashes erupted when around 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, authorities confirmed.

The International human rights organization said it was "appalled" by the security action, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The informal settlements close to Rio's airport is seen as the central command of a major organised crime groups.

Local authorities stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Resident Accounts

Community members have described the hillside area - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the raid started.

Roads remain closed across the area.

Organized Crime Spread

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their control throughout the region, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces reported over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the operation, together with dozens of firearms.

Operation Background

The combined action by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Many of the individuals are considered participants in an organization from the northern region who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.

Extensive security missions are not uncommon in Brazil prior to significant global gatherings in the South American nation.

The international environmental meeting the climate conference is scheduled in the city of Belem in the north in the eleventh month.
