Three police officers lost their lives and more than a dozen people were hurt in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property near Verona to carry out an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who escaped after the blast was found shortly later. The trio have been admitted to hospital.

The blast could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area showed the building turned into a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, stated the property was subject to an court order due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had secured themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed the media.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the detonation immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the property, the interior minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

He was convinced the explosion had happened on a level above the doorway and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed officers had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas canisters being activated”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to Italian media, noting that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
