European Cup Matches Tonight: Marseille v Newcastle & Additional Games

Welcome to a fresh night of thrilling European Cup soccer. Nine fixtures are scheduled for this evening, including 3 English teams in action. The Blues take on Barça in the standout match of the evening, whilst The Magpies travel to Marseille and Manchester City welcome Bayer Leverkusen.

League Table

It's the midway stage of the group stage, so the rankings is beginning to form. Each of the six English sides are presently in the top 12, but there are only 2 points between 5th and 16th position, so there's a sense of uncertainty about the entire situation. Everything is to play for.

Initial Game Reports

Just one goal during the opening period of the early fixtures. Samuel Dahl's 6th-minute goal has given Benfica under Mourinho a 1-0 advantage away to Ajax.

Marseille v Newcastle Preview

Even though Newcastle traveled to the south of France coming off their confidence-boosting 2-1 home Premier League victory against Manchester City on the weekend, and having beaten Union SG, the Portuguese side and Athletic Bilbao in the European Cup, their only on the road win since the start of April came in the Belgian capital at Union SG.

Not that Howe was eager to discuss the psychological aspect of this away form issue. “The Champions League is different to Premier League games,” said the coach, whose team are sixth in the Champions League standings, with nine pts from a possible twelve and automatic progression to the last 16 nearly secured. “I am not sure if you can draw parallels between them.”
