Democrats Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials expressed fury after the ex-president alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and declared they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.
The Content That Provoked the Controversy
The video footage, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who in the past acted in armed forces or intelligence positions.
"As we did, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this founding document," the officials declared in the short video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our statutes are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse improper directives, you must refuse improper directives. No one has to follow commands that break the legal system or our national charter."
The Former President's Angry Reply
The clip reportedly trigger a furious response from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he stated: "This represents really concerning, and Harmful to our United States. Their words cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Officials Answer
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a unified statement condemning the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no role in the United States," they declared. "Congress members who were featured in the video all acted our country with great national pride and excellence. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's appalling and risky death threats against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in contact with security officials "to ensure the security of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical online messages and retract his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the declaration added.
Representatives' Defiant Response
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also released a response.
"We are ex-military personnel and national security professionals who value this nation and swore an oath to safeguard and defend the constitution of the United States," they said. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to maintain it. No intimidation, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that fundamental duty."
"What's most telling is that the president deems it liable to punishment by execution for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the national charter and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "All citizens must join forces and condemn the ex-president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a time for ethical certainty."
More Partisan Reactions
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's comments and posted on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is calling for the execution of public representatives."
He added: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, every American – regardless of party – should condemn this immediately and absolutely."
The GOP leader defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "It is very risky, you have important representatives of Congress instructing soldiers to disobey orders, I think that is without precedent in American history."
The Republican leader also reportedly informed journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to analyze the language and determine all that."
White House Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when asked by a journalist, "Would the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative responded: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is responding to," the representative declared. "You have active officials of the federal government who conspired to organize a digital communication to individuals of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to ignore the executive's lawful orders."
She said: "The purity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are essentially supporting."
