Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Prevented Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
One of the co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside his partner, revealed how he plans to personally create the controversial flavor as part of a personal series showcasing issues the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators versus Parent Company
This latest announcement escalates the continuing conflict between the world-famous ice cream maker and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have asserted how the parent company and their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen announced through an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Activism and Recent Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first created in 2016 to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated that he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues that the company was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, following decades with the organization, citing concerns that the company's autonomy had been undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated how "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
