Applause from Guardiola for ‘Playground Talent’ Cherki Before Villarreal Match
Manchester City boss Guardiola, who has worked with legends such as Messi, Andrés Iniesta, and the midfield orchestrator, affirmed that Rayan Cherki stands out as the most skillful footballers he has ever seen and believes the winger will buy into the team-first ethos at the club.
Return from Injury
The Frenchman, who joined the Sky Blues from the French club for a fee of £30.5 million in time for the FIFA Club World Cup in June, has featured in a mere seven games so far. Following a a muscle issue, he made a brief appearance in the success versus Everton recently, in which he almost created a goal for Erling Haaland.
Now, he has made the trip to Villarreal and could earn his European first appearance in a City shirt.
Guardiola’s Insight
While calling for time, Guardiola found it hard to fully describe Cherki’s abilities, admitting that the biggest doubt might be how he fits in within the setup and adapts to doing simpler tasks consistently.
“Cherki is one of the biggest talents I’ve come across throughout my coaching life,” Guardiola said, exhaling deeply. “On a technical level he is excellent. The issue is how he adapts and his perception of play, what every action needs. He featured in the intercontinental cup, but then he had time off. We have to go gradually, yet his ability is clear: I feel that most of the time when the ball reaches him, the attack becomes more dangerous.
“It’s not necessary for him to have to produce extraordinary things; sometimes he just needs play simple football. Yet he possesses that something. Such as the assist to Haaland late in the game, among many actions he executes.
“He is a player immune to tension on the ball. He resembles a playground player. He is grumpy – ‘I want the ball’ – when he’s overlooked, obviously. He hasn’t been not long at the club; he needs some time because you must connect with teammates.”
Questioned if the youngster can integrate within the group dynamic, the manager answered: “Without a doubt. Such individuals are so instinctive, highly intelligent. They notice all.”
Kudos for the Midfielder
The coach likewise highlighted Nico González, who appears set to feature in the engine room. Rodri has gone back to his old team, and should be celebrated pre-kickoff at their stadium, but is unavailable with a muscle problem.
Guardiola noted: “I have the impression that González is improving steadily. We’re really happy with his attitude and he ought to improve year by year. He is cultured, receptive, a lovely guy. His family must be very happy with the person and footballer he’s grown into. He must be himself, yet while competing alongside top players, you always learn. You see how your performance elevates, however, González must be Nico, without a doubt.”
Team’s Strong Form
Guardiola also expressed delight regarding the team’s improving displays. “We put away plenty of strikes, producing a wealth of opportunities, and at the same time letting in very few. It’s only eight fixtures in the league and two on the continental stage, but I feel that each game is better than the previous one and will be surpassed by the following.
“We analyze a lot ways to enhance and how to understand situations more effectively. I possess immense confidence in the squad and I’m aware these players are training intensely. We are showing excellent condition.”
