Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

This news arrives less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world says farewell to a genuine innovator whose impact on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
