Anthony Barry Explains His Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
A decade ago, Barry was playing at a lower division club. Currently, he is focused on helping the head coach win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. His path from the pitch to the sidelines began through volunteering coaching youngsters. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He discovered his purpose.
Rapid Rise
His advancement stands out. Starting with his first major job, he established a reputation with creative training and excellent people skills. His stints with teams led him to top European clubs, plus he took on roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached stars like world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.
“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You dream big then you break it down: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a structured plan so we can to have the best chance.”
Detail-Oriented Approach
Passion, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their strategies feature psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and building a true team. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and avoids language such as "break".
“It's not time off or a break,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”
Driven Leaders
The assistant coach says along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he states. “We want to conquer the entire field and that’s what we spend long hours toward. We must not only to stay ahead of changes and to lead and create our own ones. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“There are 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We must implement a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we have to make it so clear in that period. We need to progress from idea to information to knowledge to execution.
“To develop a process that allows us to be productive during the limited time, we have to use all the time available after our appointment. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections with each player. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, observing them live, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”
Final Qualifiers
He is getting ready on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament by winning all six games without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; on the contrary. This period to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus.
“The manager and I agree that our playing approach should represent everything that is good from the top division,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the robustness, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to move and run like they do every week, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.
“There are morale boosts for managers in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information now. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”
Passion for Progress
The coach's thirst for development knows no bounds. During his education for his pro license, he was worried over the speaking requirement, as his cohort contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he entered tough situations imaginable to practise giving them. Including a prison locally, where he also took inmates in a football drill.
Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard was among those impressed and he recruited the coach to his team at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of most of his staff while keeping Barry.
Lampard’s successor with the club was Tuchel, and shortly after, they secured European glory. When he was let go, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned in Germany, he brought Barry over from Chelsea and back alongside him. The Football Association consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
